Privacy Policy for Scucha

Chitin Labs ("we", "us", or "our"), based in Australia, builds Scucha. We are committed to protecting your privacy and complying with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This policy explains how we handle your information.

1. Data Collection and Usage

Scucha operates with a "local-first" philosophy. We do not collect, store, or sell your personal language-learning data on our servers.

• Local Storage: Your tracking data, goals, and history are stored locally on your device. This includes media author, title, description, and durations, of any media consumed on tracked applications. This data never leaves your device and cannot be accessed by Chitin Labs.
• No Account Required: You can use the app without creating an account.

2. Device Permissions

To provide its core functionality, Scucha requests specific permissions on your Android device:

• Device & App Notifications: Used to detect and track content consumed in your target language. Will only track applications for which you have enabled tracking.
• Accessibility Services (Optional): Used to track certain applications which do not use media notifications such as Instagram Reels, Netflix, etc. Only the bare minimum information is collected (media author, title, description, durations) and is kept locally.

3. Cloud Backups (Google Drive)

We offer an optional feature to back up your data to your personal Google Drive.

• Control: You must explicitly enable this.
• Privacy: The app uses a private "App Data" folder in your Drive. We cannot see your other files, and no one else can see your Scucha data.

4. Analytics (Future Implementation)

To improve the app, we may implement limited, anonymous telemetry in the future.

• Purpose: To identify crashes or potential onboarding bottlenecks.
• Privacy: No personally identifiable information (PII) will be collected.

5. Third-Party Services

We use trusted third-party services to maintain app stability, provide advertisements, and analyze usage:

• Google Play Services: Used for core infrastructure.
• AdMob: Used to display advertisements.
• Google Analytics for Firebase: Used to analyze app usage anonymously.
• Firebase Crashlytics: Used to report app crashes.

Log Data

We want to inform you that whenever you use our Service, in a case of an error in the app we collect data and information (through third-party products) on your phone called Log Data. This Log Data may include information such as your device Internet Protocol ("IP") address, device name, operating system version, the configuration of the app when utilizing our Service, the time and date of your use of the Service, and other statistics.

Cookies

Cookies are files with a small amount of data that are commonly used as anonymous unique identifiers. These are sent to your browser from the websites that you visit and are stored on your device's internal memory.

This Service does not use these "cookies" explicitly. However, the app may use third-party code and libraries that use "cookies" to collect information and improve their services. You have the option to either accept or refuse these cookies and know when a cookie is being sent to your device. If you choose to refuse our cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of this Service.

6. Your Rights

Under the Privacy Act and our local-first design:

• Access & Correction: You have full access to your data within the app.
• Deletion: You can delete all your data instantly by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling it.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. Significant changes will be notified via the app.

If you have questions or wish to make a complaint about a breach of the Australian Privacy Principles, please contact us. We take privacy complaints seriously and will respond within a reasonable timeframe (usually 30 days).
